Israelis raid jail in bid to seize alleged assassin
Gunmen threaten to kill kidnapped American
if imprisoned leader is injured

JERICHO, West Bank - Israeli forces driving bulldozers and firing tank shells burst into a Palestinian prison Tuesday and removed dozens of inmates in a raid targeting prisoners connected with the of killing an Israeli Cabinet minister. Palestinian gunmen subsequently kidnapped an American university professor in the West Bank and threatened to kill him if Israel harmed a top militant leader in the jail raid.
Meanwhile, furious Palestinians attacked offices linked to America and Europe, torching the British Council building in Gaza City and kidnapping at least six foreigners. Two captives were later released. In response to the kidnappings, a U.N. aid agency and the International Committee of the Red Cross said they are temporarily pulling all foreign staff out of the West Bank and Gaza.
