Financial ties in the field of psychiatry
Experts defining mental disorders are linked to drug firms

WASHINGTON - Every psychiatric expert involved in writing the standard diagnostic criteria for disorders such as depression and schizophrenia has had financial ties to drug companies that sell medications for those illnesses, a new analysis has found.
Of the 170 experts in all who contributed to the manual that defines disorders from personality problems to drug addiction, more than half had such ties, including 100 percent of the experts who served on work groups on mood disorders and psychotic disorders. The analysis did not reveal the extent of their relationships with industry or whether those ties preceded or followed their work on the manual.

"I don't think the public is aware of how egregious the financial ties are in the field of psychiatry," said Lisa Cosgrove, a clinical psychologist at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, who is publishing her analysis today in the peer-reviewed journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics.

9/11 autopsy renews rescuers' health fears
Report on policeman's death suggests disaster still claiming lives

Updated: 5:29 p.m. ET April 20, 2006

NEW YORK - An autopsy linking the death of a police officer to dust at the World Trade Center site was chilling confirmation to many 9/11 rescuers that more than four years later, the disaster is still claiming lives.
“It should open up people’s eyes,” said former firefighter Kevin Riley, who had to retire with lung problems after rushing to the scene as the twin towers collapsed.
A class-action lawsuit claims there have been dozens of deaths related to the cloud of debris that hung over the ruins. Hundreds of police officers, firefighters and others who labored at ground zero have respiratory illnesses and other chronic disorders they blame on asbestos and other substances. And there are others who are healthy now but fear they will develop cancer or other illnesses down the line.

This one is sad .Knowing what I know about asbestos it will be as they say in the business a long dusty road to death. Many people have died as a result of exposure to asbestos. There is even speculation that many Romans and their slaves died of exposure to it. Since many items were made of asbestos. Asbestos has been around a few thousand years. A naturaly occuring mineral in the form of a rock. In a creek bed its very pretty. As a fire retarder it can mean death if not handled correctly. Not that it isn't one of the best fire retarders.
Saying all that, at the time of the towers going down many of us that worked in the ab business wondered what the outcome health wise would be. Dust alone is bad enough adding all the chemicals and metals to that dust you have a horrible mix.
